VINCENNES
The history of Vincennes. The old Borough of Vincennes passed an ordinance to provide six fire hooks and 6 ladders thirty feet long and required every family to provide itself with (2) two gallon leather buckets but many families failed to bring their buckets to a fire. Two hand fire engine was purchased from Philadelphia and 2 volunteer fire companies were organized to use it. There existed between these two volunteer companies great rivalry as they each wished to be useful and to be the first at a fire. In view of the imperfect protection in case of fires provided by the hand engines and volunteer fire companies, the city council on the 17th January, 1870 passed an ordinance for employment of a paid fire department.
